First Date, First Dance

Chris got asked to his first dance, Sadie Hawkin's, which also happened to be his first date! All of us girls at home were extremely excited for this big event and forced Chris to open the canister of goldfish in front of us so we could see who it was. We screamed and yelled with lots of joy, while Chris rolled his eyes at all the drama.

Well we all know that the most important part is of this high school ritual is how you respond. It has to be a very cute and clever way. After many suggestions and lots of input from his sisters, Chris decided to buy a real goldfish, place it in a fish bowl and respond with a poster that stated "You got me hook, line and sinker!" The poster included a bobber with a cute drawing of a fish and fishing pole. A couple of days later the answer was delivered to her front door.

In all the excitement and ritual of giving the answer, mom totally forgot to ask, "When is the dance?" "What!! We are gone that weekend." "You mean you would pick a girl over your mother's trip back to her home town!"

Looks like they had a great day date at the lake!

Hopefully, mom will get to see all the pictures of the dance.

I can't believe I missed this important event!

Memories....

I went for a walk back in time, and although everything had added a few years to itself, my mind wandered the streets of my childhood and saw things as they use to be. Memories of former years rushed through my head.

As I drove up to my Healdsburg home that housed me most of my childhood years, I could almost see my brothers and sisters running through the front yard pulling the seeds from the birch tree and throwing them at each other. I felt the warm California sun on my arms and immediately images of young children laying in Sunday slips hidden in the courtyard flooded into view. I could almost smell the sap of the tall pine tree by the driveway where we hid under its branches in play and I had visions of us roller skating down the sidewalks in our pretend roller rink. I thought I heard mother calling us home as she stood in her long "moo-moo" at the sliding glass doors.

The past came back, the small town streets I could hardly remember became so familiar and I drove them as if I had never left. I took Kiyomi, Elizabeth and Hannah on a tour of my long ago neighborhood. We drove to my elementary school, the junior high and the high school; those places that I learned some of life's toughest lessons about friendships, standards and morals. It is a shame that I could not tell every experience that so freely filled my mind.

Prehaps most treasured to me was the hour we spent in my church. My church because we built it, section by section. My church because I cleaned it weekly with my father who was the custodian. My church because so much of my time was spent in those walls attending seminary, mutaul and being present while mother served as primary president, and catering queen. Sunday morning when the girls and I arrived at this building so dear to me, the image of the Pearl children, my sisters and I running through the open field of California poppies and mountain lupines replaced the parking lot I drove on. I reverently walked to the building and opened the glass doors to the foyer, I hoped that maybe after 25 years someone I recognized would be at church that morning.

My heart leaped as I saw Sister Pearl and Bishop Pearl. Their frail bodys were not like I remembered this dynamit couple. While Sister Pearl served in many callings I remember her most as the ward chorister, my young women leader and camp director. What love filled my heart for all the things she taught me. The Mortenson family, sat in the chapel benches too. What great memories of them and there children I have, working on catering projects. sleep overs and ward events. And there was Sister Tarter, the seminary teacher and Paul LeBrett. I had a lot to be grateful for.

First Day of School

They all grow up so fast.
Look the other way for a second and before you know it they are out of the house. It's hard to believe that the days of childhood innocence are gone and adulthood is just around the corner.

Summer Is Gone

After a seven hour school shopping marathon yesterday, I painfully realized that summer is over in just a day or two. Why did it go so fast? It seems like last month I was questioning whether or not I was going to survive. Now I can't believe it is over. Can we invent the DVR for life so I can rewind or at least pause and remember the good things?

The Good Things from Summer 2010

We had a great camping trip at Gooseberry Lake up Fairview canyon with our neighborhood friends the Crimans, Daniels, Farrers, Wrights, Hursts and we even saw the Freemans who were camping there.
Mom finally got the garden in in June.

Randy and Chris spent time again together in Oregon after which Chris went to EFY for his second year.
We spent time in California with all the cousins for the fourth of July.
Lizzy attended her first EFY at Rexburg, ID.
Chris finished his Eagle Project, which means Chris got his driver's license.

Chris when to lake Yuba with the teachers and had a great time kneeboarding and tubing.
Lizzy had an awesome time at girls camp.

Mom made her first apple pie in a dutch oven.
The Farrers and the Wrights gave us there torn out sod to lay under the willow tree.
And I think all the kids grew 6 inches.

Catch Up

I guess it's time for an update. I haven't been into blogging the past few months, time just slipped by. Anyways, we have been busy.

We went on a week long vacation with Washington DC and Lexington VA. It was so nice to get away. This is a trip we had planned and prepared for for a long time! It was just great to be together with family and relax. But most importantly, it was great to see Kiyomi graduate from Washington and Lee Law School. I was so proud to see her cross the stage in her gowns. We enjoyed all the sites in DC, well not all the sites but the ones that were important on our list. Unfortunately, the last two days of the vacation, I came down with a high fever in the evenings and was totally exhausted.

I thought the fevers would pass if I just came home and rested awhile. After two days of sleep and no improvement I went to the doctor and found out I was down with phenomena. I didn't have time for phenomena! Ben was turning 21 and getting married in a week and Chris was turning 16 just after that. Not to mention school was ending and we had recitals and camp coming too.

Thanks to sisters in the ward and my own sisters, we wrapped up a beautiful wedding. Dalynda did the flowers and helped me with the food, Denell decorated an amazing cake and Deone, Daneen and Donna were in the rears setting up, cleaning up, and putting up with me. The rehearsal dinner was a lot of fun at "Fat Cats". We had a great time bowling and enjoying the evening. And the wedding the next evening was just wonderful. Ben and Cassidy, best wishes to you.

Next we had Hannah's annual dance festival at Manilla and then Chris and Elizabeth had their first ballroom recital. They are both just beginning but loving the sport.

Chris turned the big "16" on May 31st. We had a family dinner on Sunday to celebrate but the big celebration was a surprise party with Tennison and Tanner who both turn sixteen this year too. It was a surprise all up until the last moment when Chris showed up earlier than anticipated. I was bringing the ice cream over to the Lowery's home when he showed up. I just had him grab a cooler and come right in. I think he was a little surprised when he figured out that he was coming to his own birthday party and a little awkward that he showed before his guest and the other birthday boys. So I sent him away and told him I would call him when Tennison and Tanner came and he would have to look surprised. It was a fun party!

Elizabeth's birthday was celebrated with a sleep over at the Miner's Club in Park City. We had a blast swimming, soaking in the hot tub and eating tons of food. Once again it was just fun to hang out with the family.

Once again we missed out on Kiyomi's birthday as she is still in Lexington. However we heard she a had a cake bake off and ended up with several amazing cakes and lots of leftover cake for the weeks to come.

Well if Kiyomi and Lizzy had their birthdays, that means its June and I had a birthday too. Yeah, this was the big 50 birthday for mom. I just knew I would not be able to get out of bed at the age of fifty but the morning of June 14 came and I made it up with no problem. It didn't seem so bad after all. We celebrated by going to the concert in the park after work and Molly making me dinner. A few days later Denell, Challin, and Jillyn took me out to dinner at "The Olive Garden". Denell was pretty insistent that I do something spectacular for my 50th, so she took me up to "I Fly" and I went indoor skydiving. WOW! How fun! How scary!

Hannah took of to Clear Creek camp just after school let out. She was excited to be going to camp by herself and terrified at the same time. It was a great experience for her and she came home with lots of stories to tell us.

Summer has started I guess, the weather isn't quite up to summer, we're having a great deal of rain, but we're enjoying it. Our garden could use a little more sun though, it seems to be growing at a very slow rate.

Just not enough

Have you ever had one of those days where you had a large list of good tasks to accomplish and never got to them? One of which would be getting caught up on your blog that has been untouched for 3 months.

Well that is what I am facing as I try to close out what was suppose to be a wonderful day of accomplishments. I set aside the list of brilliant ideas to get done today with the intent to pick it up just as soon as....well things got in the way. So I find myself frustrated in the last moments of the day doing the important things like having family devotion, and reading to an eleven year old that just needs time with mom, and consoling a thirteen year old that had a horrible weekend and feels like the week ahead is going to be even worse, and finding a bedtime snack for hungry children and picking up the living room and not doing the good things that I really wanted to do. Well there just is not enough time to do everything.

Santa's Helper

Manila Choir Christmas Concert

Hannah and her friends sang again this year in the Manila Choir. She loves to be with her friend. This year she mustard up the courage to try out for one of the solo parts in "A Song of Peace". This really was a big deal and triumph for her shyness. I am proud she auditioned. Her best friend Janna won the spot and did a outstanding performance.

Hannah's Birthday Party

Christmas Tree Festival

We made it to the Christmas Tree Festival this year. After missing a few year in a row, it was really fun to enjoy this tradition again. Daniel's family joined us.
